MCP Photo League

September 27, 2007   -  7:00 PM

MCP announces the launch of its Photo League, a new program for admirers and acquirers of fine photography.

Photo League, MCP's new membership program for photography enthusiasts, launches with an inaugural event featuring Rick Wester, our PhotoBravo auctioneer. All are invited to hear Wester's insights on buying contemporary photography and learn about the special benefits of Photo League membership.

One of MCP's long-term goals is to connect our audiences with new perspectives and new work by contemporary photographic artists. In order to provide access for those who admire photography, as well as those who make it, we are initiating what we respectfully refer to as the Photo League. Photo League has its historical roots in a group of socially-conscious photographers who gathered in New York City in the 1930s and 1940s to share perspectives and issues affecting their art during that tumultuous period. Today, as photography acquires enormous prominence in the contemporary art marketplace, the communal, supportive aspect of the Photo League suggests itself as a new paradigm for those interested in encountering and interpreting photography. Through the Photo League's programs, including gallery and studio visits, social events, special tours of MCP exhibitions, and workshops with photography professionals, individuals will develop a richer understanding of this compelling, multi-faceted medium and will experience a variety of special opportunities to appreciate and acquire photographic art.

MCP's Photo League will launch on Thursday, September 27, 2007. Attendees will be treated to a presentation by Rick Wester, former worldwide head of photographs at Phillips de Pury and our third-year auctioneer for PhotoBravo, on collecting contemporary photographs. There will be a nominal charge for this event (MCP members admitted free, $5 for non-members, no student admission), and attendees will be encouraged to consider joining the Photo League for its annual schedule of events, the opportunity to acquire prints through a special program available only to Photo League members (details to be presented on September 27), and other benefits including reciprocal privileges and social events with other affinitive groups at local museums.

The audience is limited to 50 people, so please email photoleauge@mncp.org to reserve a place. First come, first served.
